The First Americans: Colonial Times

Instructor: Laura Gedge

Class Description:  From the mystery of the Lost Colony to the arrival of the pilgrims, this class will follow the journeys of the early settlers to America.  Students will learn why the Europeans made the long journey across the Atlantic, how settlements were established, how hostilities were growing between the natives and the Europeans and what it was like to live in the colonial era.  This will be a hands-on class with lots of engaging activities and projects.


  

3D Sculpture Art

Instructor: Jenny Wahlberg

Location: Southbridge Church

 

Time:  8:30 to 10:30 (2 hour class) 

Grades: 5th +

 

Class Fee: $120 for 2 hour class

Materials: all supplies included

Class Description:  Use a variety of mediums to unlock your sculptural potential.  After viewing a variety of sculptural art pieces and artist styles for sculpture and their meanings, students will complete several sculptures.  Mediums used could include recycled materials, nature, wire, clay, paper, and more.


  

Water World

Class Description:   There’s a whole lot of water on Earth!  Something like 326 million trillion gallons can be found on our planet.  Each week we will be learning all about the world of water through fun activities and experiments.  We will also discover facts like how a bubble’s skin is 500 times thinner than a human hair.  This class will open up all kinds of interesting questions and students will walk away with science, history and geography information about our Water World!

 

  

Twisted Fairytales

Class Description:   Students will study examples of different fairy tales and how different points of view of the characters can change the story.  We will discuss the important features of a fairy tale and what they have common.  Each student will also have the chance to write and illustrate a twisted fairy tale in which they are the main character.


  

Road Trip Across America

Class Description:   Come along as we journey along America’s landscape.  We will visit each region of our great country and enjoy hands-on activities that go along with the local flavor of the places we will explore.

 

Blast Off!

Class Description:  Blast off into outer space as we explore the sun, moons, stars, and the planets in our solar system.


  

Art Around the World

Class Description:  Dig into multicultural art to appreciate the world around us. Compare the world we live in with other cultures.  Learn how we are similar and how art is a universal language.  Study will include Japanese, African, Mexican, and more.


  

Spanish I

Class Description:   This course covers material which is normally covered in a high school Spanish I course.  The course is designed to give students a strong basis for continued learning in Spanish.  Conversational Spanish, Spanish grammar and Spanish phonetics will be taught and weekly assignments will be given. 


 

 

 Writing to Explore: The Research Paper

Class Description:  This class will transform the ever-so-boring research paper into an adventure of discovery, exploration and investigation that will engage even the most reluctant writer.  Each student will be choosing a destination of their choice for the topic of their paper and then will complete detailed research utilizing books, magazines, and online resources.  The class will go step by step through the process of writing, editing, and publishing of a research paper.  Through the use of adventure writing, the final paper will make you feel as if the student had actually been to their destination place.  Students will also learn MLA format, outlining, note-taking and other important skills that are necessary to write a quality top-notch report.

Animals in Art

Class Description:  From Armadillos to Zebras, explore all kinds of animals and mediums. We will take a good look at animals depicted in art over the ages.  Then, we will learn how to realistically draw, paint, and sculpt animals. We might explore abstract animal images, too.

  

Geology Rocks!

Class Description:   Come join us as we open up earth’s treasure chest!  Geology is much more than rock collecting and this class intends to help students discover some pretty amazing things.  We will cover all sorts of topics including how to identify rocks, minerals and gems, the layers of the earth’s crust, caves, the earth’s plates and more!  We will also engage in a ton of hands on activities and experiments that will answer questions like “What sort of rocks are we eating for breakfast anyway?”  Plan on some fantastic fun!  A field trip will be scheduled to visit the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art in Elmhurst for those who are interested.
